Friederike Mayröcker Residence - Call

Literaturhaus Wien, the Vienna House of Literature, a hub for Austria’s literary community, is proud to announce the July 2024 kick-off of Austria’s first poet-in-residence program, supported by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport. Poets from Europe and the world are invited to apply for a Friederike Mayröcker Residency.

Friederike Mayröcker (1924-2021), one of Austria’s most influential poets, spent the last twenty-one years of her life in an apartment, now managed by the Literaturhaus, in an Imperial-era building in the Fifth District of Vienna. She transformed the 80-square-meter attic apartment with roof terrace into a place that was filled with writing and reading.

Going forward, this unique site shall remain a haven for literature. From January 2025, the apartment will be made available to poets who, like Friederike Mayröcker, create their own cosmos through writing.

The program is open to poets of all ages who follow their own path as regards content, style, and/or form. It aims in particular to promote intercultural exchange and diversity, tracing the evolution of current trends in poetic discourses and concepts in a variety of countries. Poets who take part in the program shall have an opportunity to connect with the Austrian literary community. They shall attend discussions and meetings with authors as well as with representatives of the literary industry.

A dedicated publication platform shall be created on the Literaturhaus homepage, where residents can publish the work they finish during their stay in the original and in translation.

Beneficiaries shall also be invited to take part in the International Festival of Poetry, a new annual collaboration of the Literaturhaus Wien and the International Erich Fried Society, which will launch in June 2025.
